Hybristophilia

Hybristophilia is a paraphilia involving extreme sexual attraction to criminals. It is a subset of, "scelerophilia", which is defined by getting sexually aroused at nefarious characters in general.[1] Popular culture often falsely conflates scelerophilia with hybristophilia. This conflation is one of the reasons why the (likely false) meme, “nice guys finish last”, gained popular currency.

Despite the fact that high-profile hybristophilia is more common among women, a recent study suggests that everyday scelerophilia may be more common among men. The study found that men sexually desire crazy, evil people more than women do.[2] Although it may still be the case that hybristophilia is more common among women, while scelerophilia is more common among men.

In laymen’s terms, hybristophilia is “aiming for the thugs”. The existence of hybristophilia as a mostly white, suburban, female paraphilia wouldn't imply, "nice guys finish last", but rather, "law abiding, white, suburban men finish last".

Hybristophilia and thedark triad[edit]

Hybristophilia directed at infamous criminals with heavy press attention is partially due to the fact that women are sexually attracted to fame/infamy more so than men. Becoming famous through good or neutral deeds could yield even better sexual outcomes than through infamy.

Mostly a female phenomenon[edit]

While men were attracted to a handful of famous, female convicts like Casey Anthony and Jodi Arias, the degree of the attraction was much smaller than the attraction women hold toward almost all high profile modern mass murderers. It can also be noted that such women are physically attractive, whereas female hybristophilia seems to offer a rare exception to looks theory in some rare cases.

Examples[edit]

Josef Fritzl[edit]

The infamous Austrian rapist/murderer, Josef Fritzl, who was widely reviled for keeping his daughter imprisoned in a purpose built soundproof atomic bunker for decades, and fathering several children by her (one of which he murdered by throwing it in an incinerator) received “hundreds of love letters” from women.[3] Despite being sub 4 in looks.

Ted Bundy[edit]

A woman also stole Ted Bundy’s fucking seed while he was in jail. Almost every male, extremely notorious criminal has been bombarded with love notes from women.

Joran Van der Sloot[edit]

The highest profile murderer of 2010, Joran Van der Sloot, bragged to the press about the volume of love letters he received from women. Robert Chambers, the so-called Preppie Killer, had so many female groupies trying to smuggle him contraband in jail that he had to be transferred to another prison facility.[4]

Chris Watts[edit]

Chris Watts, a high profile murderer, after he got sentenced to jail for killing his pregnant part-time, monogamous escort and two daughters started receiving a barrage of love letters from women.[5]

James Holmes[edit]

With regards to killers like James Holmes, they *only* got female admiration after their crimes. James spent his days before his killing unsuccessfully browsing some scammy website for sexual losers (adultfriendfinder). This was not the case for any high profile female mass murderer who was sexually appreciated by men. They had male admiration before their killings.

John Wayne Gacy[edit]

Even the pedophile rapist and serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who was notorious for sodomizing and murdering at least 33 teenage boys and burying them under his house, was a recipient of the affections of female hybristophiles. Not known for his dashing good looks, he received a marriage proposal in prison.[6] And he also received love letters from “several” female groupies.[7]

Male hybristophilia[edit]

Hybristophilic behaviors among men is less commonly studied than among women. It seems to occur less in general, but it still happens. For example, there was a high-profile London murderer named Joanne Dennehy who was sentenced for killing three and attempting to kill 2 people.

Examples[edit]

Joanne Dennehy[edit]

The murderer Joanne Dennehy had three men, "under her spell", aid her in her killings, including one who was sexually attracted to her dark triad traits.[8] While Dennehy was in custody, her male lover wrote:

you ‘devil in the flesh' [...] ‘So looking forward to seeing you babe, well your sexy smile and thoughs[sic] evil eyes of yours oops evil ment[sic] to [say] angel eyes (lmfao)’

—A likely male hybristophile, writing to Joanne Dennehy[9]

As mentioned earlier there were male fans of Casey Anthony and Jodi Areas, two high-profile female criminals. They did not go so far as to try to mate with her in prison though, as a fan of Ted Bundy did.

Male hybristophiliac psychology[edit]

Although there are more high-profile instances of female hybristophilia compared to male hybristophilia, there actually may be more male hybristophilia existing if a recent study in the PAID journal is any measure.

In a PAID study, the author found that women rated psycopathic people lower in sexual desirability than men. She also found that men were particularly attracted to borderline disorder traits in good looking women.[10]

It's possible that men are more attracted to evil and crazy in general, while women are more attracted to actual criminals.
